1, 2, 3, 4

I keep putting this updating business off because I feel like I don't have the energy to do it justice, but I'm sure I can just ramble for a bit and it will do the job just fine.

A glimpse of where I find myself working First, I'm sad about the death of David Lange. He was a very special New Zealander, and the first prime minister that I can remember. I don't remember the French bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, but I do remember the introduction of Tomorrow's Schools and I remember learning how the name 'Lange' is spelled differently to how it sounds (long-ee). I remember him with the same fondness as most other New Zealanders, as a skilled and amusing speaker, a clever man with a good heart. I never met him - the closest I got was hearing him speak at a dinner in my first year hall at university - but I was alarmed to learn of the loss of his leg a week or so ago and saddened by today's news.

Second, I have been building a career for myself. I just got onto it today, but I'm making great leaps and have moved from 'wannabe' to 'rising star'. Go Singstar!! It helps that I've discovered how to get by with lame humming when I don't know how the song goes ;)

Third, I haven't had a weekend in a while now. How novel! As well as last weekend, I worked both yesterday and today, and while much of my working day was occupied with such recreational past-times as table tennis, Sunday paper reading and the aforementioned Singstar, nevertheless it was work and I am suitably tired, having just returned home a few minutes ago. I think I need a wee lie-in tomorrow.

Fourth, there are some cds that I keep meaning to mention but haven't. The first is the new release from The Bads - Earth From Space. It's the very first release on Christchurch-based label South Recordings and it's a gorgeous piece of sophisticated pop. Straight to high rotate! No signs of slowing! Then there's The End of Things, delightful debut EP from the Bachelorette on Arch Hill Recordings. Bleepy synth pop with lovely falsetto vocals n great hooks. And extra bonus recommendation number three is another from South Recordings, Big Machine from Thomas:Parkes. Kind of big sounding along the lines of Mogwai n that kind of thing, but no guitars. Ooh.

pretty... sounds good too

Times are good. I'm going to sleep now.

Not actually anonymous, as it is Katy here. Just wanted to say that I did meet D Lange. When I was a student I worked at his sister's wedding, handing round the champagne etc and got v v pissed and he was charming and not as fat as you might think. This was in the 80s. He didn't seem to mind two drunk students in shabby black and white flirting with the guests (well, my friend Al was flirting - but then, that is practically his whole personality). Was also v sad to hear he had died. The leg thing must have been heinous. Makes you think - in hindsight just leave the leg on.

Yes, I felt sad too and I have no menories of him. He was obviously an amazing character, I always laugh at that quote about the dreaded Maldoon:
After a very long day we have a very short knight.

Good luck with the singing!

I went to the memorial service on Saturday, it was very nice with lots of people in attendance. Loved the sausage sizzle too :)
